Phudu is a sans serif display typeface designed by Duong Tran and inspired by Vietnamese hand-lettering billboards of the past. This typeface supports a wide range of languages and is a new way of achieving variable fonts – the lighter the Phudu font, the more extended it becomes, making it easier to read than other lightweight narrow typefaces.
Duong’s goal was to create a modern and easy-to-read Vietnamese typeface that had the soul of traditional Vietnamese lettering styles found on billboard stores in the past.
He mixed some of the researched letters from those traditional styles and improved them to fit modern-day design trends while maintaining their “Vietnamese” essence. The typeface is named Phudu, which means “revival” in Vietnamese and has a timeless quality.
