X Cicéro est un atelier de dessin de caractères proposé aux étudiant·es de l’option design graphique de l’ESAD Valence, construit autour de la petite collection de caractères en bois de l’atelier d’impression typographique de l’école.

Les différents jeux de caractères, pour la plupart incomplets et abîmés, ont été catalogués, mesurés, et dans la mesure du possible identifiés. Une série d’impressions des caractères disponibles a ensuite servi de point de départ au dessin de caractères numériques, qui a leur tour ont servi de modèles pour des essais de découpe numérique. Les objectifs, à long terme, sont de pouvoir réhabiliter ces caractères et d’en produire de nouveaux, et de faire vivre l’atelier d’impression typographique.

L’atelier s’intéresse également aux différentes techniques de production traditionnellement utilisées pour la production de caractères en bois. À cette occasion, Éric Nunes, spécialiste du livre ancien et de la numérisation du patrimoine à la bibliothèque municipale de Nancy, et Marko Drpić, imprimeur-typographe et fabriquant de caractères en bois, sont intervenus pour nous présenter leurs travaux et recherches.

Les caractères listés sur ce site sont disponibles au téléchargement ‘tels quels’ (aux formats .otf, .woff et .woff2) sous licence libre (SIL Open Font License) sur leurs pages respectives. Ils seront mis à jour au gré des nos avancées.
